Blue-Faced Phoenix by Alkahla Blue-Faced Phoenix by Alkahla
I wanted to see if I could draw a little phoenix and make it even cuter than the one I drew years ago. I think I might have succeded :D

A little blue-faced phoenix perched on an orchid tree branch. I'm not really happy with how his glow came out, I had a different vision for it but at least I tried. And I think I ruined it with the background color, but it looked boring white.

Anyway, enjoy.

(edit) I keep changing the file trying to get the brightest, truest scan I can so I'm sorry it if keeps showing up on your deviations list.

It's color pencil, and it's a normal sized paper, like 8"x 11" or so.

This must be the cutest thing I've ever seen. I've always been very fond of birds, and the phoenix is an obsession of mine, and this... omg ;A; *I apologize sincerely for the lack of something constructive, but this just killed most of my brain cells*

as critique from a fellow artist:

this is one of the cutest art that i have ever seen... honestly i will be creating a collection by next year inspired from a phoenix. at first I thought that these mythical creature symbolizes power, rage, stregnth and mystical beauty. but on how you portrayed it it made me look at it in a nicer way,...in a very pleasant perspective.... I simply love it....

Thank you! I have always had that impression about them too, but just for fun I tried making it small and adorable and I found it refreshing. Why shouldn't they be able to come in a variety of shapes and personalities?

I actually like your rendition of the phoenix better... it's so cute and pudgy! Your shading is really smooth and simple, is is great because it brings out the colours more in my opinion. Great job with the orchids, too!

Absolutley adorable. I was looking for pictures of phoenix all over deviantart and I was thinking of a sleek, majestic eagle-like bird, but this.... This is waaaay better. >D< I love the blue face! What medium did you use? Color pencils?

Ah thank you :D That's all I've ever seen of Phoenixes and frankly for an imaginary bird, there aren't a lot of variations on it. I mean, dragons have billions of cool designs here on DA but phoenixes, not so much. I liked the idea of making a species within a class of phoenixes, in a way. I plan on doing another variation soon, hopefully :).
Yes, color pencils.

Fantastic; really a great drawing! It reminds me of one of those baboons with the blue on their face. The phoenix looks as if it is wanting something - perhaps a person to love or to look out for? It's small eyes are waiting with hope bestowed in them. It is sitting on the branch as a part of nature, not trying to stand out or be the most prominent subject in the piece, or in it's 'environment'. One thing I would do would be to give the background a bit more detail - make it more complicated, make the viewer think; don't make it cluttered, though! ;)

I love the way you drew the glow around the phoenix, it makes it shine and gives it great importance. The flowers have a wonderful shading style, it looks very realistic! The phoenix looks a bit timid, maybe a leaf to cover part of its face would suit him? The feather on his head stands out, giving him a little crown. What did you use to draw this? Did you use PrismaColor colored pencils?

Thank you so much! Yes, I've been planning on reworking the background for some time, so I might get down to it today. Yes I used prismacolor color pencils for the whole thing, and just a thin artistic black pen for the lines.

I don't think the background's bad at all - I rather like the muted gray-blue. It's such an adorable and round little bird!
